Hindu mythology explains the origin of dance not in terms of cultural evolution, as a result of human endeavour, but as a divine manifestation of the Vedas (the holy scripts of the Hindu).

According to Indian mythology, dance was created in connection with drama for the entertainment of all Gods byBrahma, the creator. Shiva, the king of dance, developed the dynamic male part whereas his consort, Parvati, created the subtle female aspect. The first drama was such a great success that the saint Bharata Muni wrote down the holy script of dance, Natya Shastra, on behalf of the Gods, to pass it on to mankind for the purpose of edification. Ever since, the Indian dance serves the purpose to communicate Hindu ethics to mankind in order to enhance spiritual development.

Today, there are seven classical Indian dance styles attributed to different regions, which can be distinguished by music, costume and technique:

Bharata Natyam, Mohini Attam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Kathak and Manipuri.

The term "Bollywood Dance" is derived from the famous and beautiful song and dance scenes from Bollywood movies, which thus created a new dance style. And as the name is also the dance to a mix of the traditional and the new.
